Lebanese army soldiers examined the beach where the raid is said to have taken place

The Israeli military said a senior Hezbollah operative was captured in a naval strike in the northern Lebanese town of Batroun on Friday.

An official said special forces arrested the person and brought him back to Israeli territory in a so-called “special operation.”

Lebanon’s state news agency said an “unidentified military unit” arrived on the beach at dawn, raided a nearby building and captured one person before continuing on by speedboat.

The raid sparked anger among Lebanese authorities. Prime Minister Najib Mikati’s office said he had instructed the Foreign Ministry to file a complaint with the UN Security Council.

It added that the Lebanese army and UN peacekeeper Unifil were both investigating the raid – and that Mikati had called for “accelerated” results.

Lebanese Transport Minister Ali Hamieh suggested the raid may have violated UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which aims to end hostilities following the 2006 Israel-Hezbollah conflict.

“If it is proven that the kidnapping took place via a naval landing, where is the implementation of Resolution 1701?” He was quoted by local media.

Hezbollah did not comment on Israel’s claim that the captured person was a member of the group, while Hamieh told local media that the man was a captain of civilian ships.

CCTV footage that emerged online and was located in Batroun by the BBC appeared to show a group of soldiers leading a prisoner between some buildings.

The Israeli military provided limited details about the operation but said the unit involved was Shayetet 13, a naval commando unit that specializes in sea-to-land incursions.

Batroun, a Christian town north of Beirut, has so far been relatively protected from Israeli military operations in Lebanon, which have been focused on the south of the country, the Bekaa Valley in the east and Beirut’s southern suburbs.

More than 2,200 people have been killed in Lebanon since Israel launched a ground offensive into the country on September 30. According to the Israeli military, 38 soldiers were killed in Lebanon during this period.
