4 dead, 17 injured in serious crash on I-96 in Ingham County

LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – A fiery crash on I-96 late Saturday evening in Ingham County left four people dead and 17 others injured. The crash occurred near M-52 in the Webberville area around 11:42 p.m. According to Michigan State Police, westbound I-96 near M-52 was closed in that area so Consumers Energy could move power lines across the highway. When the police reopened the highway, numerous vehicles were still stopped on the highway when a semi-truck with a trailer plowed into the stopped vehicles. Police believe that around 15 vehicles were involved in the accident.

According to a Michigan State Police investigation, the driver apparently did not see the traffic jam and was unable to stop his vehicle in time. The force of the impact caused the semi-trailer and numerous other vehicles involved to catch fire.

Four people were confirmed dead, while seventeen others were taken to U of M Health Sparrow or McLaren hospitals in Lansing for serious injuries.

I-96 near M-52 is expected to be closed indefinitely as Michigan Department of Transportation crews work to maintain the structural integrity of the M-52 overpass due to the fire.
