4 dead, 17 injured in violent highway accident

LANSING, Mich. – Four people were killed and 17 others injured after more than a dozen vehicles stopped on I-96 near Webberville late Saturday night.

Lanes were closed due to power line installation near the M-52 overpass. The highway was closed earlier so Consumers Energy crews could lay power lines across it.

Michigan State Police said the accident occurred around 11:42 p.m. after troopers reopened the highway.

“Numerous vehicles were stopped on the highway at this time. A semi-truck pulling a trailer was traveling westbound on the highway and was approaching stationary traffic,” Michigan State Police said in a social media post. “It appears that the driver of the semi-truck did not see the backlog and was unable to stop his vehicle in time.”

The semi was in the left lane and struck several vehicles, causing the semi and the vehicles involved to catch fire.

According to MSP, approximately 15 vehicles, including the semi-truck, were involved in the accident.

Those involved were taken to University of Michigan Sparrow and McLaren Hospitals in Lansing, police said.

I-96 is expected to remain closed to westbound and eastbound vehicles indefinitely to investigate the accident and examine possible damage to the M-52 overpass bridge due to the fire caused by the accident.

The Michigan Department of Transportation plans to inspect the highway bridge.
