Members of the Northview Marching Band were uninjured after a pileup that killed four people and injured 17

WEBBERVILLE, Mich. – Four people are dead and 17 others are in the hospital after a fiery crash late Saturday night involving a local high school marching band’s trailer.

According to a Facebook post from the Northview Band Boosters, their students are safe after the massive pileup in the area of I-96 near the M-52 Freeway in Webberville.

In a statement on X, Michigan State Police said the accident occurred Saturday around 11:42 p.m. Crews had just completed work using consumer energy to lay power lines and the highway was reopened. Many cars were stopped on the road.

A semi-truck with a trailer was traveling westbound in the left lane and was approaching traffic. MSP believes the driver did not see the cars were stationary and was unable to stop in time. The truck collided with several vehicles, causing a pileup that officials said involved up to 15 vehicles, some of which (including the tractor-trailer) crashed so violently that they caught fire.

MSP said at least 17 people were seriously injured and hospitalized, and four people were confirmed to have died. Her identity has yet to be revealed.

According to Northview Band Boosters, no one from the band was injured in the incident, but a trailer containing instruments was damaged. The band was on the way home from the state finals in Detroit.

MSP tells FOX 17 that I-96 westbound and eastbound will be closed while crews work to clear the roadway. The overpass is being inspected by MDOT for any damage from the fire.
