DRAMA! Atlanta United forces Game 3 with Inter Miami and Lionel Messi

Atlanta United forced Game 3 in the best-of-3 first round series against Inter Miami CF, earning a 2-1 win over the Supporters’ Shield champions at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Saturday evening.

The all-important game will take place Nov. 9 at Inter Miami’s Chase Stadium (8 p.m. ET | MLS Season Pass), with the winner advancing to face Orlando City SC or Charlotte FC in the Eastern Conference semifinals of the Audi 2024 MLS Cup Playoffs .

Atlanta winger Xande Silva delivered a knockout blow to Lionel Messi & Co. in the 94th minute when he fired home from the 18-yard box, delighting the home crowd of nearly 69,000 fans.

Silva’s goal followed a solid second half in which Derrick Williams equalized in the 58th minute. The centre-back powerfully headed Pedro Amador’s cross past Drake Callender, inspiring belief in the Five Stripes.

Inter Miami, which won Game 1 2-1, took the lead in the first half through David Martínez. After Brad Guzan’s mistake, the loan central defender received Federico Redondo’s pass and shot it into the empty goal.

Although Inter Miami had numerous chances to tie the series, notably through Messi, Luis Suárez and Jordi Alba, Silva ultimately had the final say.
