Cecily Strong reveals she’s pregnant, recalls ‘SNL’ abortion sketch

Cecily Strong is pregnant — and she’s using her big announcement to spread a personal, political message ahead of Tuesday’s election.

The Saturday Night Live alum announced in an Instagram post on Friday that she is pregnant through IVF, linking the news to her 2022 Goober the Clown sketch on the show.

“I did a piece a few years ago SNL as Goober the Clown who had an abortion the day before her 23rd birthday,” Strong wrote. “I’m happy to report that same clown is now very happily pregnant through IVF at 40.”

In the sketch, Strong took on the role of Goober the clown to discuss her actual abortion experiences in her early twenties, juxtaposing her emotional vulnerability and political urgency with silly clown gags. “Did you know that one in three clowns will have a clown abortion in their lifetime?” she asked the audience. “You don’t because they don’t tell you. They don’t even know how to talk to other clowns about it. It’s going to happen, so it should be safe, legal and accessible.”

Strong told her colleagues SNL offered her overwhelming support at the time. “I was so scared and frustrated and I thought, ‘Either I’m not going to write essays for anyone every night, or I can finally just put this on the show,'” she continued The view. “And luckily… the show was very supportive right away. I think it was the only thing I ever did where I didn’t have notes. I don’t think anyone wanted to give us notes.”

Strong said she felt compelled to share her story because reproductive health is on the ballot in many states. “It’s kind of crazy and scary to reveal all of this,” she wrote on Instagram. “But for me it’s much scarier to think about what might happen after Tuesday’s election. I currently live in a state where I can receive all the healthcare I may need. But we will not be safe anywhere in the US if there is (a) national ban, as Project 2025 promises.”

Project 2025, the right-wing agenda that some associate with the Trump campaign, does not specifically mention a nationwide abortion ban, the BBC reports. However, a strategy is being outlined to remove the abortion pill mifepristone from the market. According to PBS, it also calls for the Department of Health and Human Services to “re-establish itself as the Department of Life by explicitly rejecting the notion that abortion is health care.”

Strong continued in her new position: “The Supreme Court has already decided that it is OK to let some of us die depending on our geography, and the current Republican nominee is bragging about being responsible for that Supreme Court decision In fact, Donald Trump has bragged about his role in the coup roe v. Wade, and maternal mortality has increased by almost 25 percent since 2020, reports Vox.

The comedian further recalled her experience with reproductive health care. “I have been in many waiting rooms with other women throughout my life,” she wrote. “All those years ago I felt scared and lonely in a clinic in California, the last few years I’ve been frustrated and anxious in fertility offices in New York, giddily tearing everyone’s ears off and wishing everyone around me good luck “Like I was Forrest Gump” on the day I was transferred.”

She continued: “After my abortion at age 23, a friend sat with me and gave me a big hug, only to sit with her and hug her big 17 years later, after a serious pregnancy loss. “I had family,” and strangers reach out to Goober and tell me about their own experiences – some of which they had never shared with anyone before.”

She added: “I saw so many women in these waiting rooms who were going through their own issues and issues with their reproductive health, family planning and body autonomy. Some look relieved. Some look excited. Some look scared. Some look like they are.” The deep sadness over previous losses and the even deeper hope that there will finally be good news make me seem just as speechless as I was on my transfer day. But the one thing no one in these rooms has seen is not being able to make their own decisions.

Strong ended her message by urging her followers to vote for reproductive rights. “Let us all please vote to protect, uplift and support all of us who share or have shared these waiting rooms together,” she wrote. “And for future things like Little Miss, I’m actually very confident that I’ll meet her next spring.”
