Kalamazoo County is considering early voting as the deadline approaches

There are only a few days left to vote early and in person for the 2024 election.

Voters in West Michigan flocked to the polls to cast their ballots well before Election Day on Tuesday.

Election workers had to make significant changes due to the early voting process, but for Kalamazoo County Clerk Meredith Place, the process went smoothly despite all the changes.

“Over the last few days we have had to increase the amount of supplies at the early voting sites,” Place told News Channel 3. “We have increased the number of ballot applications. We have increased the supply of ballots.”

There was great demand for early, personal voting.

According to Place, Kalamazoo County sees nearly 2,500 voters daily at various polling locations in the area.

Looking forward, Place expects to have about 15 to 20 percent of Kalamazoo County voters by the end of the weekend.

“Voters want to vote early and in person,” Place said. “They are taking advantage of this opportunity to vote and cast their vote.”

Place said county officials will strongly consider things like moving to larger venues, changing voting times and increasing the number of election inspectors in future elections.

Christine Brown, a Kalamazoo County resident, was impressed with how smoothly the process went.

She told News Channel 3 that there were poll workers who were incredibly helpful and provided her with voting information when she arrived.

“I assumed there would be a lot of people taking advantage of the opportunity, so either unfortunately or fortunately there was no line at all,” Brown said. “It was super easy, I could wake up in the morning, vote without being harassed, in and out and done, I really enjoyed it.”

Brown questioned why early in-person voting should always be an option.

“It made it really accessible, instead of the frantic rush that occurs when everyone is working and you’re simultaneously trying to figure out how to get from work on time so you can have a moment to vote,” Brown said. “At least for me, it eliminated all of those stressors.”

Voters with mail-in ballots can submit them in person until Election Day, but they cannot mail them because the deadline is approaching.

Early in-person voting ends Sunday and polls open at 7 a.m. Tuesday.
