The Fox Theater unveils updated seating designed to preserve its historic charm

DETROIT (WXYZ) — The Fox Theater is a Detroit staple with a history spanning nearly 100 years. The theater has recently undergone some renovations and modernizations.

And now guests can enjoy a show while seated in newly designed comfort.

“We’ve made two big changes here.” said Tim Padgett, senior vice president of operations, Illitch Sports + Entertainment. “We made a routing change and we made a change to the seating in general.”

The seats may look like the originals, but they are not. In fact, they have been redesigned to resemble those from the 1920s – right down to the fabric choice and color.

“We added a new fabric that is an exact replica of the 1928 fabric,” Padgett said.

Padgett oversees all operations at the Fox Theater. He says the modernization of the historic venue will be a real treat for guests.

“We added cup holders,” Padgett said. “This is a nice amenity for our guests.”

Padgett says the way ticket holders find their seats is also now easier.

“We created these aisle markers,” he said. “And before it was just an empty piece of metal. That’s why we decided to illuminate the rooms and give our guests the opportunity to easily see which row they are going into when they enter.”

Padgett says that in addition to being a historic theater and a gem in Detroit, the Fox has continually worked to keep it that way.

“The Fox is a jewel in this city. It has created thousands and millions of memories for people and since the Ilitchs took over in 1988 they have invested heavily in making sure it is world class.”

And anyone sitting in the 300 section now might just get a 313 seat.

Padgett says that while the Fox has hosted some of the most legendary artists like Elvis and Motown artists, the new additions are a way to keep the gem iconic.

“We wanted to move the needle forward and make sure the place feels like it always has, but is even more perfect for the guest. It is history being rewritten.
