Trump knows how to turn Democrats’ insults on their head

Former President Donald Trump perfected the art of the troll.

The final stretch of this presidential campaign has seen the emergence of a more comfortable and comedic Trump, questioning Vice President Kamala Harris’ claims to have worked at McDonald’s and capitalizing on President Joe Biden’s description of Trump supporters as “trash.” And he does so with a sense of humor that is missing from this campaign.

Biden made the nonsensical remark during a phone call with Voto Latino on Tuesday night in response to what was considered a racist joke made about Puerto Rico by a comedian who performed at Trump’s rally at Madison Square Garden. The president has tried to walk it back, and Harris has distanced himself from the insult.

But Trump saw the opportunity and responded by rolling onto a Green Bay tarmac in a garbage truck with “Trump” on the side and a bright orange and yellow safety vest.

It was certainly a show and not the typical setting for a billionaire. But Trump is the people’s billionaire and he made it.

Two weeks ago, Trump visited a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania, put on an apron and started passing fries from the drive-thru window.

These are stunts. He trolls Harris very effectively and questions her credibility in the middle class.

“One of my people came in and said, ‘Sir, you know the word ‘garbage’ is the hottest thing right now?'” Trump said from the stage in Green Bay, still wearing his vest. “Sir, would you like to drive a garbage truck?”

A photo is worth a thousand words and the images were entertaining – even for Trump critics. Instead of being the ruinous image of Michael Dukakis in a tank and helmet, Trump seemed completely comfortable in his truck seat and vest.

The stunts show a likeable Trump who not only attracts working Americans, but actually likes them. Harris never managed to get there.

Biden’s crude comment perfectly reflects the Democratic establishment’s views on the half of America they consider less than themselves. Former President Barack Obama accused these Americans of clinging to their guns and religion. Hillary Clinton called them a basket full of deplorables. Trump puts on an apron or vest and meets them where they work.

And he really seems to enjoy it.

During a Fox News segment, Trump sat relaxed in a hair salon in the Bronx, joking with barbers and customers and preparing for a relaxed visit that apparently had nothing to do with begging for votes.

Here, too, he seemed to enjoy dealing with the people. And that resonates with voters. They see a candidate who is willing to laugh at themselves and laugh with them.

This is a connection that Trump’s critics will never understand.

“How do you like my garbage truck?” He asked reporters from his elevated perch, displaying a confidence that even critics have difficulty downplaying.

Trump knows how to attract media coverage and convince his voters in the most unlikely ways.
