Aaron Judge’s drop changed the World Series

It was a Hollywood party in the South Bronx after the Yankees blew a five-run lead in the deciding Game 5 of the World Series.

During the postgame celebration, Dodgers owner Ervin “Magic” Johnson told MLB Network’s Harold Reynolds that his reaction to Aaron Judge’s dropped fly ball in the fifth inning was “thank God.”

“(The Yankees) shook this stadium,” the Lakers legend said while celebrating the Dodgers’ 7-6 victory after the game. “And when that happened, the dynamic changed.”

Judge made a crucial error when he dropped a lazy fly ball right on him as the Yankee captain took his eyes off the ball in the fifth inning and the team was leading 5-0.

The ultimately decisive rally suddenly had legs.

Anthony Volpe followed with an error, loading the bases with no outs, taking a groundball from Dodgers catcher Will Smith and letting his throw bounce to Jazz Chisholm on a force play at third base.

Starting pitcher Gerrit Cole also didn’t cover first base on a play that would have taken him out of the inning.

The comedy of errors essentially gave the Dodgers six outs in the inning and helped Los Angeles score five runs to tie the game, leading to a collapse of epic proportions.

“That changed the game for us,” Johnson said, while Reynolds replied: “No doubt about it.”

“Now we come and score five runs and then I thought we had a chance because the stadium got quiet and we bundled up and high-fived. “We got emotional now and that really helped us,” Johnson concluded.

Johnson also added that he was ready to refuel the jet to return home and play Game 6 in Los Angeles as the Yankees appeared to be on their way to their second win of the series.

Instead, they just have to return to Hollywood for the victory parade while the Yankees search for answers.

The Yankees have a lot of questions to answer heading into the offseason while most of the Dodgers roster is still under contract through the 2025 season.
