All the costume reveals and best moments

It’s showtime!

Dylan kicks off this year’s Halloween celebration as Lydia Deetz from Tim Burton’s 1988 classic Beetlejuice.

Fans of the film will surely remember the memorable moment when Lydia Deetz (Winona Ryder), dressed in her signature black dress, summons the fiendish demon from the afterlife by saying his name three times: “Beetlejuice!” Beetlejuice! Beetlejuice!”

And just like in the movie, voilà, he suddenly appears. But instead of Michael Keaton, it’s TODAY singer Al Roker who nails everyone’s favorite ghoul. And yes, the pun is completely intended.

Of course, Al and Dylan recreate the unforgettable dance scene to Harry Belafonte’s hit “Banana Boat (Day-O),” which has become one of the most popular Halloween songs since the film.

According to TODAY costume designer Staci Greenbaum, Al’s Beetlejuice costume required some work to get right, including aging the striped fabric used to create Al’s iconic suit.

“(We had to) find the right weight that would be OK for a suit, then age it and strain it so that it made sense with the makeup and the hair, because it’s dead, it’s moldy,” Greenbaum explains and says that Al’s Beetlejuice look even required a trip to the craft store to get some moss to embellish his suit.

How does Al feel about this year’s transformation? “I always loved the movie,” he tells TODAY.com.

Better yet, Al says he enjoyed working with fellow co-host Dylan once again. “The last time we teamed up, it was Marty McFly and Doc,” he says of their pairing in 2018, when the Halloween theme was ’80s music and film icons.

Like Al, Dylan is excited to be working with her weather partner again. “That’s my favorite part because when we team up, it’s because he invited me to come along and he knows I really like the costume,” Dylan tells TODAY.com.

How does Dylan feel about this year’s reveal? “I’m looking forward to opening the entire event,” she enthuses.

When it comes to Al’s Beetlejuice impression, TODAY.com only has one question: Did he practice saying “It’s showtime” before the big reveal?

“That goes without saying,” he chuckles. Well done, Al, well done.

Even better? At 9 a.m., Dylan makes a surprise return in Lydia Deetz’s iconic red wedding dress.

The transformation and costume change was a complete surprise to Al, who had no idea that Dylan’s 2024 costume reveal was a bad decision.

“To create a surprise for Al — and he knows how much I love the movie — it’s like, ‘Oh my God. We kept it completely secret,’ says Dylan.

As for her second costume of the day, Dylan says it totally helped her transform into a character. “You can see why actors have so much fun,” she says.

“That’s what makes the day so special because no one knows this side of us except when Halloween comes,” Dylan says. “It’s so much fun to be a part of it. It’s my favorite day of the year.”
