NEW YORK – Gerrit Cole did not allow a goal. The Yankees had built a five-run lead in Game 5 of the World Series.

Then it all unraveled in one disastrous inning on the field.

With the Yankees leading 5-0, the defense behind Cole committed two errors and another defensive blunder to get the Dodgers back in the game and tie the game with five runs in the fifth inning Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium.

Through four innings, Cole was on pace. He needed 48 pitches to get by and managed just two walks while recording three strikeouts.

But the Yankees ace’s stellar start faltered after he gave up a leadoff single to Kike Hernandez.

Gerrit Cole fails to cover Anthony Rizzo’s grounder to first

After getting two strikeouts against Gavin Lux and Shohei Ohtani, Cole appeared to get out of the inning with a slow groundball from Mookie Betts in right, but Anthony Rizzo didn’t rush the ball and Cole failed to cover the bag, as the Dodgers’ first run scored.

The Dodgers then tied the game at 5-5 thanks to a two-run single by Freddie Freeman, followed by a two-run double by Teoscar Hernandez into the left-center field gap. Cole was gassed and needed three mound visits to get through a 39-pitch inning.

On the next at-bat, he walked Muncy before recording the final out with a sharp groundball up the middle to Volpe.

None of the five runs were earned against Cole, who allowed four hits in the frame while his pitch count rose to 87.
