Four-star 2025 quarterback Carter Smith is leaving Michigan

The Michigan Wolverines lost a key member of their 2025 recruiting class on Wednesday night when four-star quarterback Carter Smith withdrew from the program. He announced the news on social media.

Smith is ranked as the No. 14 quarterback in the 2025 class by the 247Sports Composite, as well as the No. 158 player overall and the No. 26 player from the state of Florida. Smith had been committed to the Wolverines for almost a year and made his commitment in November 2023.

Smith’s retirement is a bit surprising, but given Michigan’s increased efforts to sign five-star Bryce Underwood, it’s not entirely out of place. Underwood has been linked to the Wolverines in recent weeks as December’s initial signing day approaches, and Michigan is believed to be preparing a sizable NIL package to acquire his services.

Underwood has been committed to LSU since January, so Michigan still has a few hurdles to overcome if it hopes to land the star quarterback.

With Smith not currently on the roster, Michigan does not have a committed quarterback in its 2025 class. Michigan currently has freshman Jadyn Davis on the roster as well as class of 2026 commit Brady Hart as options to become Michigan’s quarterback of the future. That could certainly change if Michigan can sign Underwood or someone from the transfer portal this offseason.
