Piston marks for the first 4 games

Both Jalen Duren and Isaiah Stewart are good at some things and terrible at others, leading to some uncomfortable questions among fans.

Duren was a little more active on the perimeter, but he still played mostly poorly defensively. Yes, he shoots 85 percent from the floor, but all he does is dunk, so that’s the case.

There have been signs of improvement, but we’re still talking about the exact same things in his third season.

Stewart has been arguably the team’s best defender, but is averaging 2.5 points per game and has yet to make a 3-pointer in four games. After averaging 4.1 and 3.8 long-distance attempts over the last two seasons, Stewart is averaging 0.3 per game so far this season.

When Stewart isn’t shooting threes, he doesn’t add anything offensively and it’s difficult to play with another non-shooter, as we saw last night when the Pistons struggled to score while both Stewart and Ron Holland II lay on the floor.

If you could combine Duren and Stewart into one player you might have something, but right now both have major flaws that show up in every game. It’s time to consider whether the Pistons need a major upgrade here, even if Duren isn’t old enough to legally buy a beer.

It’s still early so I’m not giving up on this tandem, but they need to get better.
