Erik ten Hag’s two-and-a-half year spell at Manchester United will divide opinion.

He ended United’s longest trophy drought in almost 40 years, winning two domestic cups – and defeating fierce rivals Manchester City in one of the finals.

Still, there were too many humiliating moments and games for a team of United’s stature to accept, making his exit on Monday all but inevitable.

Here’s a look at what went wrong for the Dutchman at Old Trafford:

EXPENDITURE

Ten Hag has spent around £615 million ($800 million) on players since arriving at Old Trafford in the summer of 2022. In the Premier League, only Chelsea have spent more during this time. Still, few of the signings were a success and there was short-sightedness as most were either Dutch players – and therefore well known to Ten Hag – or had previously played in the Netherlands. This summer alone, United spent around $240 million on five new signings – two of which were Dutch internationals Joshua Zirkzee and Matthijs de Ligt and another, Noussair Mazraoui, who played under Ten Hag at Ajax. The biggest flop was undoubtedly Brazilian winger Antony, who moved to Ten Hag from Ajax for $95 million but barely plays.

STYLE

Arguably the biggest criticism of Ten Hag was his inability to instill a distinctive philosophy or style of play at Old Trafford. Under the Dutchman, United were a “moment team” – a far cry from the cohesive and attractive team he had built at Ajax. Managers such as Ange Postecoglou (Tottenham), Unai Emery (Aston Villa) and Arne Slot (Liverpool) quickly established a clear identity within their respective teams, despite being at the helm for a shorter time than Ten Hag. Across the city, Manchester City – under Pep Guardiola – played some of the best football English football has ever seen. Meanwhile, Ten Hag seemed to stumble through games with United showing no clear pattern of play and the team relying on big individual moments to score goals. Ten Hag has also been found out tactically many times. Just last week he surprised fans by using Mazraoui – a full-back – as a number 10 in a Europa League game as United drew 1-1 at 10-man Fenerbahce.

STATISTICS

Ten Hag will leave United with a few trophies but far too many big defeats and poor statistics. United are currently off to their worst ever start to a Premier League season – 14th place and 11 points after nine games – following on from their worst result – eighth – in the Premier League era (since 1992). The 7-0 defeat at Liverpool last season was the heaviest defeat against their fiercest rivals, the worst competitive defeat in more than 90 years and certainly the low point of his reign, which also included a 3-6 defeat at Man City came with 4-0 defeats at Brentford and Crystal Palace and a final place in a Champions League group with Galatasaray and FC Copenhagen.

SITUATION

There will be some sympathy for Ten Hag, who may have been doomed by simply being a good manager at the wrong time at United. His entire tenure has been marked by upheaval and behind-the-scenes change, whether in the first two years when United was up for sale – and its American owners were heavily criticized for the way they ran the club – or in the In recent months, when United was up for sale United was adjusting to its new football leadership under the leadership of new minority owner Jim Ratcliffe. However, Ten Hag always had plenty of money to spend no matter who he reported to and clearly should have done better with the quality of players at his disposal. United need a big personality to pull the club out of its current malaise and compete with the likes of City, Liverpool and Arsenal – and Ten Hag never seemed the man to do it.
