    Severe thunderstorm danger remains throughout Iowa

    Parts of southwest and central Iowa are under a severe thunderstorm warning Wednesday afternoon and evening, with rain and severe weather moving in across the state. Warnings have popped up in several counties so far this afternoon.

    Severe thunderstorm warning for the Des Moines metro is expiring

    A severe thunderstorm warning for the greater Des Moines area was lifted at 2:30 p.m

    The warning, which covered parts of Dallas, Madison, Polk and Warren counties, carries the risk of 60 mph wind gusts and quarter-sized hail.

    A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect until Wednesday 7 p.m

    The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for about two dozen counties through 7 p.m. Wednesday. This includes Dallas, Polk and Warren counties in the Des Moines area. Story County is not included.

    Cities in the metropolitan area have postponed their Beggar’s Night celebrations as they anticipate severe weather. Most trick-or-treating now takes place on Thursdays.

    What severe weather threats are there in Iowa today?

    Storms are expected to move across the state, producing wind gusts of up to 80 miles per hour, isolated large hail and tornadoes.

    The weather service warned earlier in the day that the storms were moving quickly and Iowans would have less time than normal to find shelter. Tornadoes could be difficult to detect as storms develop later this evening.

    Urban flooding is also possible with rainfall amounts of 1 to 3 inches.
