Severe storms are possible in southern Wisconsin overnight

Just five years ago, Dane County Regional Airport recorded 4 inches of snow on Halloween, breaking the Oct. 31 record of 3.2 inches set in 1926 and the record for any October day of 3.8 inches set on Oct. 26, 1926 , 1997.

October 2019 set the record for snowiest October in Madison with 8.1 inches, breaking the previous October record of 6.2 inches set in 1917. Before the 4 inches on Halloween, a record 1 inch fell on October 28th , a near-record 2 inches fell on October 29th and a record 1.1 inches fell on October 30th.

This year’s Halloween weather features a spooky trick from the other end of the weather spectrum: thunderstorms, heavy rain and maybe even a tornado for southern Wisconsin before temperatures drop from the mid-60s to the mid-40s Thursday morning -or-treat ends. Southwest winds of 20 to 30 mph and gusts over 40 mph are also forecast.

The predicted wild weather comes after Madison recorded a high of 82 on Tuesday, tying the Oct. 29 record set in 1937, according to the National Weather Service. Tuesday’s low of 65 degrees was 11 degrees above the normal high of 54 degrees on October 29th.

Madison was expected to reach a high of 77 on Wednesday, with southwest winds of 15 to 20 mph, gusts up to 40 mph and a 40% chance of rain, the weather service said.

The chance of showers and storms overnight is 90%, with 1.5 to 2.5 inches of rain falling in Madison, a low around 60 degrees and winds up to 30 mph.

National Weather Service meteorologist Mark Gehring said there could be severe storms in south-central Wisconsin, with damaging wind gusts and a possible brief tornado. The storms are expected to produce heavy rainfall, particularly north and west of the Madison metropolitan area

The threat of heavy rain and severe storms is primarily from the Madison area to the west.

The heavier rain and storms will pass by Thursday morning, Gehring said.

Temperatures are expected to rise back to the 60s Saturday through Tuesday, with more rain expected Sunday through Tuesday and more storms possible Sunday night into Monday night.

A winter storm warning is in effect for Bayfield and Douglas counties in far northwestern Wisconsin from Thursday morning through Thursday evening, with possible strengths of 2 to 6 inches.

And of course, nothing will top the infamous Halloween blizzard of 1991 that hit northwestern Wisconsin and adjacent parts of Minnesota, dumping 36.9 inches of snow at Duluth Airport and 45 inches at Superior from October 3 to November 3 has thrown. 3, 1991.
