South Shore High School Boys Soccer Top 10 Rankings

If the latest MIAA power rankings are any indication, we should expect to see many more playoff runs from South Shore high school football teams in the coming weeks.

The rankings, released Tuesday morning with the regular season nearly complete, showed eight local teams in the top 10 of their respective divisions, led by Cohasset (No. 1 in Division 4), Weymouth (No. 3 in Division 1) . and Hingham (No. 3 in Div. 2). A total of 24 regional teams were in contention for the playoff spots, including seven in the Div. 2 and six in Div. 1.

All of this is consistent with previous results.

Oliver Ames is aiming for his third straight Div title. 2 state crown as Norwell looks to add to the Div. crown. 3 trophy for the third time in four seasons. In addition to the two state titles in 2023, South Shore also had a state finalist (Pembroke in Div. 3), a semifinalist (Weymouth in Div. 1, for the second straight year) and two quarterfinalists (Hingham in Div. 2 and Cohasset in Div. 4).

We’re back with our second top 10 finish of the season. Here’s our first from September 12th.

We start the rankings with some teams that narrowly missed the cut. (Records through Monday, October 28 and previous rankings in parentheses):

On the bench: Archbishop Williams (11-4-3), Abington (9-3-5), Rockland (10-3-4), Milton (6-8-3), Marshfield (7-6-4), Duxbury (8- 6-2), East Bridgewater (10-8-1), Southeastern Regional (11-2-4), Bridgewater-Raynham (6-6-5), Rising Tide Charter (12-2-2), Holbrook (12 -6-0)

10. Braintree (9-5-4, NR)

Senior captain Calum McClorey (24 goals, 4 assists) is one of the most explosive forwards on the South Shore. The Wamps finished the regular season strong (5-1-1 in their last seven), including a solid win over playoff contender Needham and a second draw against Brockton. Earlier in the season, Braintree also equalized Weymouth before losing the rematch. Latest MIAA Power Ranking: No. 19 in Div. 1

9. Scituate (13-2-3, NR)

The Sailors have flipped the script after going 5-13 last year. Coach Ross Maki credits captains Darren Gould and Ashton Seymour with driving the turnaround. Sophomore Ben Roche leads the team with 13 goals after missing most of his freshman year due to injury, and goalkeepers Phil Laniel and Andrew Borgman have combined for six clean sheets. 8. BC High (6-5-6, 2)

The Eagles are in the Div. before a home game. 1 playoffs, thanks to handling one of the state’s toughest schedules. They have quality wins against Xaverian (10-4-3 record) and Weymouth (14-2-2) and face Xaverian, Lexington (11-2-6), Brockton (8-1-6) and Arlington ( 12) versus -3-3) and Leominster (11-4-2). Latest MIAA Power Ranking: No. 9 in Div. 1

7. Hingham (15-2-0, 4)

Under first-year coach David Leahy, the Harbormen haven’t really caught a break, despite battling a number of injuries. A 31-player squad helps. Goalkeeper Jacob Riker and central midfielder Brayden Lawler were instrumental in a stingy defense that recorded 12 shutouts. Hingham’s only losses came to fellow top-10 players Brockton and Pembroke. Latest MIAA Power Ranking: No. 3 in Div. 2

6. Pembroke (13-2-3, 5)

The Titans defeated North Quincy on Monday to capture their fourth straight Patriot League Fisher Division title. After the defeat in the division, they will try to take the next step. 3 finals a year ago. Pembroke has a balanced record with Shane Crowley (9 goals, 19 assists, most in the Patriot League), Colin Blake (8 goals), Gabe Rushing (7 goals) and Jack Duperre (7 goals). The Titans own quality wins over Hingham and Marshfield and have drawn Scituate twice. Latest MIAA Power Ranking: No. 15 in Div. 3

5. Cohasset (14-4-2, 8)

The Skippers lost in the Div. Four quarter-finals in each of the last three seasons. Is this the year they break through? Nathan Askjaer (19 goals despite missing time through injury) and Cian Casey (9 goals, 15 assists) are a devastating 1-2 blow, and the one-goal defeats to Norwell and Weymouth prove Cohasset can punch above their weight. The Skippers can also boast victories over Div. boast. 3 Pembroke and Div. 1 Marshfield. Current MIAA Power Ranking: No. 1 in Div. 4

4. Brockton (8-1-6, 7)

Good luck trying to beat the boxers in the Div. 1 playoffs. The only team to do this so far is Lowell, which is 18-0. Brockton has quality wins against Leominster (11-4-2), Durfee (8-3-5), New Bedford (8-5-5) and Hingham (15-2) and has two ties against Braintree and singles games against BC High (6-5-6) and New Bedford. The Boxers have a record of 35-8-10 since the start of the 2022 season, but have been eliminated in the round of 16 in each of the last two seasons. Latest MIAA Power Ranking: No. 8 in Div. 1

3. Weymouth (14-2-2, 3)

The Wildcats’ final push to the regular season was impressive – they were 10-1-1 in their last 12 games, losing only to BC High and allowing just 6 goals in the series. Weymouth has a wide variety of attacking options – Cam Walty (18 goals), Gabe Rey (11 goals), Mason Fasoli (9 goals) and Mike Primo (12 assists) – who serve coach Bill McEachern’s club well in the division should. 1 playoffs. Latest MIAA Power Ranking: No. 3 in Div. 1

2. Norwell (15-1-2, 6)

Since starting the season 2-1-2, the Clippers have won 13 straight and have outscored their opponents 56-4 with nine shutouts. Ronan Coffey, Gavin Blake and Lucca Ruffini led the scoring, and goalkeeper Nolan McKenna was virtually unbeatable for most of the season. Norwell’s only defeat came against Weymouth on September 7th. The Clippers’ best win was a 2-1 decision at Cohasset on September 25; They also beat playoff participants East Bridgewater, Abington and Rockland. Latest MIAA Power Ranking: No. 10 in Div. 3

1. Oliver Ames (13-2-2, 1)

Don’t bet against a three-game sweep for the Tigers, whose only setbacks are one-goal losses to two other heavyweights – Div. 1 Concord-Carlisle (11-2-3 record, 5th place) and Div. 2 Mansfield (12-3-2, No. 8). OA clinched its sixth straight Hockomock League Davenport Division title with Monday’s win at Stoughton. Goaltender Zack Gilson has 13 shutouts, and Craig Churchill (14 goals) and Luke Churchill (11 assists) are the offensive engines. Current MIAA Power Ranking: No. 7 in Div. 2
