Valencia’s Copa del Rey match against Parla Escuela on Wednesday has been postponed due to extreme weather conditions expected in the coming days.

The club has subsequently asked La Liga to postpone Saturday’s game against Real Madrid, scheduled to take place at the Mestalla Stadium.

Red “extreme danger” weather warnings are in effect in southern parts of the country, including Valencia.

Valencia’s first round match against the third division club was due to take place at the Estadio Las Américas in Madrid, but the club asked the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) to postpone the game, saying it was the “most appropriate measure”. Strong winds and heavy rain are expected to cause widespread travel disruption.

The duel between Pontevedra and Levante scheduled for Thursday and Ejea against Hercules on Wednesday has also been canceled and rescheduled.

The RFEF remains in contact with all clubs and further postponements could follow.

Spain has been hit by torrential rain and hailstorms, causing flash floods in several regions in recent days.

Valencia are bottom of La Liga and have managed just one win in their first 11 games this season, increasing the pressure on head coach Ruben Baraja.

“I stand here with the confidence, conviction, commitment and energy to turn the situation around,” Baraja said at a news conference on Tuesday, before Valencia requested that the game be postponed to Wednesday.

“Above all, I take on the greatest responsibility because I am the one who leads the team and the group.

“If it doesn’t work out, I’ll be the first person to bear responsibility and I’ll stand here to endure the pressure that comes with the situation we find ourselves in.”
