USPS warns against absentee voting as Election Day approaches next week

The United States Postal Service (USPS) is warning Americans who want to vote by mail to mail in their ballots today to ensure they are counted.

The USPS said in a news release issued Monday that it has already taken “extraordinary measures” in preparation for Election Day on Nov. 5.

“If you choose to vote by mail, please email early because every day counts,” the USPS statement said.

“We continue to recommend that it is a common sense measure for voters who choose to mail in their ballots to do so before Election Day and at least a week before their elections office is required to receive them. If a ballot is due at the election.” The Postal Service recommends mailing the ballot by Tuesday (Oct. 29).

According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, most U.S. states are currently not accepting mail-in ballots received after Election Day.

However, 18 states and Washington, DC have different grace periods to account for mail delays.

Alaska gives voters 10 days for their ballots to arrive if they are postmarked by Election Day, while Texas allows an extra day.

Those 18 include the battleground state of Nevada, where ballots received up to four days after Election Day but postmarked by Nov. 5 will continue to be counted. Ballots with unclear postmarks that arrive by the third day after Election Day will also be counted.

Battleground states like Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Arizona, Wisconsin and Georgia all require mail-in ballots to arrive on or before Election Day in order to be counted.

“In addition to the specific absentee ballot processes and procedures the Postal Service employs throughout the year as in previous general elections, the Postal Service is taking extraordinary measures in the final weeks of the election season to quickly get mailed ballots close to or on Election Day and /or the state’s return deadline,” USPS said.
