“We have to stop being so insulted”

Sen. JD Vance said Monday that while he didn’t hear a comedian’s racist jokes at his vice president’s rally in New York the night before, he believes Americans should “stop feeling so insulted.”

“I’m just – I’m so over it,” Vance said after an NBC News reporter asked about comedian Tony Hinchcliffe’s inflammatory comments about Latinos and others, the first speaker at former President Donald Trump’s rally in Madison Square Garden on Sunday.

“I heard about the joke, I didn’t actually see the joke that you mentioned, but I think it’s telling that Kamala Harris’ final message is essentially that all of Donald Trump’s voters are Nazis, and “You should really be mad at a comedian telling a joke,” Vance said.

When Vance was asked again about the racist comedy after his speech Monday night in the southeastern Wisconsin city of Racine, he doubled down on his statement.

“A comedian told a joke, and I don’t think that’s news worth making,” Vance told a local reporter.

“Maybe I’m old-fashioned, or maybe I just grew up with a grandmother who had a particularly bad mouth. But do you know what I do? Do you know what I do when I think a joke is stupid or not funny? “I’m not laughing,” Vance continued.

Ultimately, Vance added, he is “not concerned that a joke told by a comedian that has nothing to do with Donald Trump’s campaign” will have any impact on Trump’s chances of winning next week’s election.

Harris said Monday that Trump’s rally was “focused and fixated on the grievances about himself and the division of the country.” She didn’t say Trump voters were Nazis.

Among Hinchcliffe’s jokes that sparked bipartisan outrage was his remark that “there’s literally a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean right now. I think her name is Puerto Rico.”

There is a large Puerto Rican presence in the battleground state of Pennsylvania, and Trump’s campaign tried to distance itself from the comedian’s comments.

“This joke does not reflect the views of President Trump or the campaign,” said senior adviser Danielle Alvarez.

However, Vance suspected it was just a distraction.

“My own opinion on this is, again, I didn’t see the joke. You know, maybe it’s a stupid, racist joke like you said, maybe it’s not. I haven’t seen him. “I’m not going to comment on the specifics of the joke,” he said.

“I think a lot of Americans are tired of the distractions and the crap. They want our candidates to talk about how they can solve people’s problems, and that’s what we should do,” he said.

Vance added that he recently heard from someone who was offended by a joke that comedian George Lopez told at a Harris rally and that he told them, “Can we all just take a calming pill and “Make a joke now and then?” Time? This is ridiculous.”

“We will not restore the greatness of American civilization if we fret over every little thing. Let’s have a sense of humor, have a little fun and win in eight days,” Vance said.

Top Trump ally Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida took a different view on Monday, tweeting: “Puerto Rico is not trash, it is home to fellow Americans who have made tremendous contributions to our country.”

“I understand why some people were offended by a comedian’s jokes last night. But those weren’t Trump’s words,” Rubio added.

Hinchcliffe’s routine, which included other racist jokes about Latinos and black Americans, came just days after Trump said the U.S. was “like a garbage can” in his remarks on immigration.

Marc Anthony, a Grammy-winning singer of Puerto Rican descent who supports Harris, took to social media on Monday to criticize Trump’s handling of the island as president.

“I remember what he did and said, about Puerto Rico, about our people. I remember after Hurricane Maria devastated our island, Trump blocked billions in aid while thousands died. “I remember Trump throwing paper when our families lacked clean water and electricity. “Towels and calling Puerto Rico ‘dirty’ and ‘poor,'” Anthony said, adding that that was why he supported Harris.
