Fires are burning in Osage, Payne Counties on Tuesday, helped by strong winds

A warm and windy Tuesday combined with ongoing drought led to dangerous wildfires across Oklahoma on Tuesday.

In Osage County, authorities are asking residents near Pawhuska between Farrell Avenue to Lynn and Skyline to LB May evacuate because of the fire.

“Please avoid the area and allow emergency responders to work,” the sheriff’s office said on social media.

Several homes were reportedly destroyed by the wildfires in the area.

As of 9:40 p.m., OSCO asked people to avoid Skyline Drive due to heavy traffic. Authorities said the fire was contained to that area.

The National Weather Service said a fire warning is in effect for northeast Osage County and that the Pawhuska fire has become increasingly dangerous and is spreading north.

“Prepare to evacuate quickly if requested and follow all safety instructions from local emergency management officials. Do not drive into smoke,” NWS Tulsa reported.

In Payne County, the NWS also issued a fire warning due to a wildfire near Cushing, but it has expired as of 5:50 p.m.

Oklahoma Forestry Services said about 3,000 acres of land had burned so far and that two large air tankers were protecting structures with fire suppressants.
