Tim Walz Calls New Viral Dwyane Wade Statue “Terrible”

Add Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz to the list of critics of the Dwyane Wade statue.

Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate caught a glimpse of the statue, which has gone viral because it looks nothing like the Miami Heat legend.

Internet memes said the statue looked like almost everyone else except Wade. Walz said he saw a resemblance to Laurence Fishburne.

“How gracious was D-Wade to the sculptor? Because that’s pretty terrible,” Walz told Dan Le Batard. “I don’t know how they got that wrong.”

Walz referred to Wade as a “classmate” because he seemed to agree with the outcome of the statue.

“Either he’s being merciful or he didn’t care,” Walz joked.

Wade seemed okay with his appearance, at least publicly.

“If I wanted it to look like me, I would just stand in front of the arena and you could all take pictures,” Wade said. “It doesn’t have to look like me. It’s an artistic version of a moment that happened that we’re trying to cement.”

Wade said the revelation was still a “special moment for my family and me.”

“I don’t know many people with a statue, do I?” Wade added. “Does anyone here know anything about the process of creating a statue? Nobody out there knows that either. It’s an incredible process to be part of. And it’s a complicated process. When I sit down with the Miami Heat and I, we wanted to capture a moment that represents the organization, myself and this city. We felt like we had captured this moment in an artistic form.

The statue’s pose is of Wade yelling “This is my house” during a game against his hometown in March 2009 Chicago Bulls. However, Wade’s jersey in this game was an “El Heat” jersey, not a “Miami” jersey.

Oscar Leon, the artist who created the sculpture, said 800 hours of work went into the statue, 16 of them with Wade, and he used photos of Wade that were converted into a clay model with the help of some computers.
