The off-field news about Detroit Lions WR Jameson Williams continues to go wrong.

According to WXYZ in Detroit, local Detroit police have launched an internal investigation to determine why Williams was not arrested during a traffic stop three weeks ago when he was found to be in possession of a firearm without a concealed pistol license.

Body camera footage confirms that Williams was in the passenger seat while his brother drove around midnight on October 8th. They were pulled over for speeding when Williams’ brother revealed that there were two guns in the car: one in the back seat and one underneath Williams’ (the passenger) seat. According to the news report, the gun under Williams’ seat was registered to him, but the Lions fullback does not have a concealed handgun license. The other gun was registered to his brother (who had a license).

Here is the Michigan law regarding concealed weapons:

(2) A person shall not carry a pistol concealed on or about him or, whether concealed or not, in a vehicle operated or used by him, except at his residence, place of business or other place in the country of the person’s convenience shall not carry the pistol in a place or in a manner inconsistent with the restrictions of this license without having a license to carry the pistol as provided by law and if licensed.

(3) A person who contravenes this section is guilty of an offense punishable by imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years or a fine not exceeding $2,500.00.

UPDATE: A statement from Williams’ attorney denies any wrongdoing and suggests that the license is valid for carrying both firearms.

Williams was reportedly handcuffed and placed in the back seat of a police car. However, a sergeant later arrived on the scene, made several phone calls, and Williams was eventually released without presenting a police report or warrant.

It’s unclear what the next step is and whether Williams will be in trouble since he wasn’t arrested at the scene.
