Conservative commentator Ryan Girdusky was banned from CNN after he made a racist comment on the radio toward journalist Mehdi Hasan in which he referenced the deadly pager attack in Lebanon last month.

In Monday night’s controversial panel discussion on “CNN NewsNight with Abby Phillip,” Hasan, Girdusky and other guests discussed Donald Trump’s rally at Madison Square Garden on Sunday. Hasan, an outspoken critic of Israel’s military behavior in Gaza and a former MSNBC host, declared that he supported the Palestinians, to which Girdusky casually said, “Well, I hope your pager doesn’t go off.”

Lebanon’s health minister said at least 37 people, including two children, were killed in last month’s attack involving exploding pagers and walkie-talkies. The attack is widely believed to have been carried out by Israel. Thousands of civilians and Hezbollah fighters were injured.

Girdusky’s comment was immediately dismissed by some of the show’s guests, as well as host Phillip, who said it was “completely out of pocket.”

“Then I apologize,” he replied. “I thought he said Hamas; I apologize.”

The show went into commercial break shortly afterwards, and when it returned, Phillip informed viewers that Girdusky had crossed “the line of complete lack of civility” and had been removed from the show. CNN soon issued a statement saying that there was “no room for racism or bigotry at CNN or on our broadcast” and that Girdusky “will not be welcomed back to our network.”
