Devastating wind gusts and high fire danger on Tuesday

Today’s forecast:
A strong low pressure system moving through the Great Basin this morning will bring the potential for a very windy afternoon to southern Colorado. Southwest winds will really pick up starting at 9 or 10 a.m., when a High Wind Warning goes into effect for Pueblo County, the Arkansas River Valley and the southeastern Plains. Damaging wind gusts of up to 60 miles per hour are possible in these areas.

High Wind Warning for Pueblo County and the Southeast Plains – 10/29/24

Low humidity in the teens and wind will trigger widespread red flag warnings today in areas along and east of the I-25 corridor. Even with slightly higher relative humidity, the wind and dry fuels pose a significant fire threat to our forecast today.

A warning has been issued for a large portion of southern Colorado for Tuesday (10/29/24).

As for temperatures…highs today will be between 40 and 50 degrees in the mountains and 70 to 80 degrees in the plains.

Forecast for Colorado Springs: High: 70; Low: 32. Another red flag warning is in effect for El Paso County starting at 11 a.m. today. Wind gusts will be significantly stronger across the region than yesterday, with peak gusts of around 80km/h this afternoon.

Pueblo Forecast: High: 76; Low: 33. A busy day for Pueblo County, with both a High Wind Warning and Red Flag Warning in effect from late this morning until 6 p.m. Devastating wind gusts of up to 60 miles per hour are possible.

Canon City forecast: High: 70; Low: 36. An approaching storm will bring wind gusts in excess of 50 mph in eastern Fremont County on Tuesday, with possible dust tossed up due to the strong winds.

Woodland Park Forecast: High: 58; Low: 22. As the Highland Lake Fire burns northwest of Divide this morning, weather conditions will need to be monitored closely as winds increase in intensity throughout the morning hours. Peak gusts in Teller County are expected to reach peak gusts in excess of 50-60 mph this afternoon.

Tri Lakes Forecast: High: 60s; Low: 20s/30s. A very windy and dry Tuesday will bring an increased risk of high fire danger conditions according to our forecast today. Be sure to avoid outdoor burning and any activity that could produce sparks, as wind gusts may reach speeds of over 50 miles per hour this afternoon.

Plains forecast: High: 70s/80s; Low: 30s/40s. A High Wind Warning and Red Flag Warning will go into effect for the eastern Plains late this morning. In some areas, wind gusts can reach speeds of up to 60 miles per hour, with dust and sand also posing a problem due to the strong winds.

Forecast for Walsenburg and Trinidad: High: 60s/70s; Low: 20s. Similar to the eastern Plains and southern I-25 corridor, we will see both a Red Flag Warning and a High Wind Warning on Tuesday. In wind-prone areas on the eastern slopes, peak gusts may reach speeds of 60 miles per hour.

Mountain Forecast: High: 40s; Low: 10s/20s. Gusts of up to 70 mph are possible in the mountains today, with snow falling at times during the afternoon hours, particularly in areas closest to the Continental Divide. Snowfall should taper off this afternoon before another round arrives late this evening.

Advanced Forecast Forecast:
Winds will weaken significantly this evening, resulting in a much colder night in the 20s and 30s. A cold front Wednesday morning will bring some cooler and more uncertain changes to our forecast. Moisture will come from the north, with light rain and snow showers on Wednesday. A few inches of snow accumulation is possible from Teller County to the Palmer Divide. Light pollination is possible in the Springs, especially on the north and west sides of downtown. Highs on Wednesday will only warm into the 40s, followed by 20s Wednesday evening for Colorado Springs.

Halloween looks sunny and dry, with daytime highs in the mid 50s. We’ll see a comeback of the lower to mid 60s in Colorado Springs on Friday and this weekend, with skies likely to be dry through at least Sunday afternoon.
