The first week of early voting saw huge voter turnout across the St. Louis region.

Ben Borgmeyer, Democratic elections director in St. Louis City, said Election Day is expected to be less crowded compared to previous presidential years if 2020 is any indication.

“What we saw in 2020 was the latest thing happening right now as far as voter turnout,” Borgmeyer told KMOX Radio. “They saw an easier election day. You saw increased voting during the early voting period. This could be an example of that.”

Borgmeyer also said lines should be shorter on Election Day if people take advantage of a new law that allows St. Louis residents to vote at any polling place in the city. But Borgmeyer says it’s not easy to predict voter turnout as a whole based on early voting alone.

“The city of St. Louis was somewhere between a low of 60 (percent) and a high of 75 (percent) in the last presidential election,” he said. “I would bet turnout will be somewhere in between, but it would be great if it was higher.”

Borgmeyer said if the participation rate is on the high end, they can still expect to see results from St. Louis sometime on the evening of Nov. 5.
