Who will be the victim of “Only Murders in the Building” season 5?

(WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Season 4 of Hulu’s Just murders in the building.)

Just one more episode – and one more extremely The likely murderer has finally been found in the case – it seems that Charles (Steve Martin), Oliver (Martin Short) and Mabel (Selena Gomez) will soon solve Sazz’s (Jane Lynch) murder. But just as long Just murders Viewers know that when one case ends, another begins… and we suspect at least one beloved character won’t make it through the season four finale alive.

As we approach the Season 4 finale, here are our predictions for which character could be the next target and which case the podcast trio will have to solve next.

Michael Cyril Creighton as Howard in Only Murders in the Building

Disney/Patrick Harbron

Howard

Howard (Michael Cyril Creighton) had more screen time this season than in previous seasons. This is certainly welcome, but perhaps also a cause for concern. Could the show’s writers take extra steps to endear us to him before he meets a tragic end? It’s also worth noting that Howard recently adopted a cadaver dog; it would just be like that Just murders letting Howard’s pet lead him to his poor owner’s body. However, Howard has been a popular supporting character on the show for several seasons, and it’s also possible that the show simply wanted to expand his role. We hope he sticks around and starts his podcast about pets with jobs.

Jackie Hoffman as Uma in Only Murders in the Building

Craig Blankenhorn/Hulu

Uma

For the building’s current residents, Uma (Jackie Hoffman) could be another target. She didn’t show up much in Season 4, and when she did, she complained… but we wouldn’t expect anything less from Uma. Her murder would certainly fulfill the “inside the building” aspect of the series’ title, and the trio investigating her death would give her dimension beyond her funny one-liners. With this in mind, the setup of her murder investigation would closely resemble that of the late Bunny (Jayne Houdyshell), which was also fleshed out as Charles, Mabel and Oliver worked to find her killer. Given the similarities, we’re not sure Just murders would go this route again.

Amy Ryan as Jan in Only Murders in the Building

Disney/Patrick Harbron

Jan

She doesn’t live at Arconia, but that won’t necessarily take a target off Jan’s (Amy Ryan) back. This season, the series made sure to let viewers know in a few short scenes that Jan escaped from prison and that, as far as we know at this point, she is still at large. The show has also pointed out that in Season 1, Jan received a message from a mysterious person who claimed to be watching her… and since then, Charles, Oliver, and Mabel have also received these messages. If it’s a murderer with ties dating back to the show’s first season, it’s possible they’re murdering Jan to silence her – who knows what she knows? Plus, it could be extremely amusing for the trio to have to solve the murder of a murderer.

Meryl Streep as Loretta in Only Murders in the Building

Patrick Harbron/Hulu

Loretta

This would probably be the most heartbreaking potential loss, and we hope the show doesn’t go in that direction. However, there is often a big surprise when things get too happy for a character. Oliver and Loretta (Meryl Streep) have been very happy lately. They plan to get married and Loretta achieves success in her career. Everything is going well for them – but in the world of television it is to Happy? However, Loretta may be protected by the series’ status as a cozy mystery; Her loss may be too damaging to Oliver for the show to maintain its optimistic tone. Loretta isn’t necessarily safe (few characters are on this show), but we think Meryl Streep wants to stick around as long as she sticks around Just murdersthe show will probably keep its character.

Da'Vine Joy Randolph as Detective Williams in Only Murders in the Building

Patrick Harbron/Hulu

Detective Williams

It would be an interesting twist for the trio to investigate the death of a police officer, and while we wouldn’t see Detective Williams (Da’Vine Joy Randolph) leave, we would be interested to learn more about her character during the inevitable murder investigation. Additionally, Detective Williams could be a target when a mysterious killer tries to clear up lingering questions about the first season’s investigation. It’s possible that she noticed details that didn’t add up, which could serve as plot threads that haven’t yet been resolved (e.g. the dog’s poisoning, Jan’s note, etc.). It’s probably more likely that a murderer would come after Jan considering she already received a threatening message in Season 1, but we can’t rule out Detective Williams either.
