Giants injury news: Tyrone Tracy in concussion protocol

New York Giants rookie running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. is in the NFL’s concussion protocol after hitting the back of his head on the turf late in the Giants’ 26-18 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday Night Football.

Tracy left the field after a 2-yard run with about four minutes left in the fourth quarter. Steelers defensive lineman Cam Hayward made the tackle, hitting Tracy hard and landing on him, ensuring the dynamic rookie couldn’t gain any more yards after contact. Hayward quickly called trainers to Tracy, whose head appeared to bounce off the ground at the end of the game.

Tracy was escorted off the field by the Giants trainers and straight into the blue medical tent. A short time later he was seen leaving the tent without a helmet and was taken straight to the locker room where he refused to return to the game.

Tracy carried the ball 20 times that night for 145 yards (7.3 per carry) and a touchdown, with his longest carry being a 45-yard touchdown run to end the Giants’ hopes of a win after two Steelers touchdowns to keep alive. The Steelers’ defense has been remarkably stingy against the run this year, which made Tracy’s night all the better.

Tracy has seemingly assumed the role of RB1 in the Giants’ offense, the role he first assumed after his 18-carry, 129-yard (7.2 per carry) rush against the Seattle Seahawks. It remains to be seen how long the Giants will have to go without Tracy, and they may have to go without him in a short week against the Washington Commanders.
