What does the Steelers QB do in 2024?

play

Russell Wilson is no longer considered one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL, but he is certainly one of the best quarterbacks in the league.

The Pittsburgh Steelers starter has a more than reasonable contract in 2024. He signed the one-year deal with the Steelers in hopes of reviving his career after a disastrous couple of seasons with the Denver Broncos.

However, things didn’t work out right away for Wilson in Pittsburgh. He missed the first six games of the 2024 NFL season while dealing with a calf injury, and it appeared as if fellow offseason player Justin Fields would retain his starting spot after ending the season with a 4-0 record. 2 had begun.

After a standout performance against the New York Jets in his season debut in Week 7, Wilson looks set to spark a career resurgence.

The Steelers are happy with this development and have Wilson to thank for it. Not just because of his performance, but also because of the deal he accepted to come to Pittsburgh.

Here’s what you should know about Russell Wilson’s contract and where he ranks among the lowest-paid quarterbacks in the NFL.

NFL Trade Deadline Landing Spots: The best fits for the top trade candidates in 2024

Russell Wilson contract details

Wilson signed a one-year, $1.21 million contract with the Steelers ahead of the 2024 NFL season. Below are the full details of this deal according to Spotrac.com:

  • Expression: 1 year
  • Total value: $1.21 million
  • Average Annual Value (AAV): $1.21 million
  • Complete guarantees: N/A

Wilson’s deal also includes a full no-trade clause, giving him veto power over any potential trade away from the Steelers.

Wilson’s contract is certainly a bargain. He is one of the league’s lowest-paid quarterbacks in 2024, and only San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy earns less than him among starting signal-callers.

While Wilson’s contract may seem small, he deserves a lot more than it appears. This is thanks to his previous contract, a five-year deal he signed with the Denver Broncos ahead of the 2022 NFL season.

How much does Russell Wilson make in 2024?

Wilson will make $39 million for the 2024 NFL season. The Steelers will pay $1.21 million of that, while Wilson’s former team, the Broncos, will pay the rest.

Wilson’s $39 million profit came from the guaranteed money in the $242.5 million contract he signed with Denver in 2022. This deal included $124 million in guarantees. The Broncos had already paid $85 million of those guarantees through the 2023 NFL season, but had to give the 35-year-old the remaining $39 million back after releasing him on March 13, 2024.

However, the deal between Denver and Wilson included offset language. That meant that if he signed a contract with another team, his 2024 salary would be deducted from the amount the Broncos owed him.

That was an incentive for Wilson to sign the cheapest contract possible – unless another NFL team offered him a contract worth more than $39 million in 2024. Wilson gave the Steelers maximum flexibility by accepting the $1.21 million contract while leaving the remaining $37.79 million to the Broncos on the bill.

How much do the Broncos owe Russell Wilson in 2024?

To recap, here’s what the Broncos and Steelers owe Wilson for the 2024 NFL season:

  • Broncos: $37.79 million
  • Steelers: $1.21 million
  • In total: $39 million

Pittsburgh will not owe Wilson anything beyond the 2024 NFL season unless it signs him to an extension.

Meanwhile, Denver won’t owe Wilson any new money beyond the 2024 season, but he will still carry a team dead cap burden of $32 million in 2025, for a total dead cap value of 85 million US dollars, the largest sum in NFL history.
