Pistons star explains Pistons’ late deficiencies against Miami Heat

Another game goes by and the Detroit Pistons fail after putting on an impressive performance throughout the match.

Looking at recent history, it’s easy to view the Miami Heat as the stronger team of the two. As expected, the Pistons entered the match as underdogs.

Cade Cunningham had a solid game himself, but the young star and his team were able to pull out a win on the road in Miami on Monday night.

Since Detroit had a chance to take the lead and pull away, Cunningham believes they have no one to blame but themselves for the loss.

“We were more than anything,” Cunningham told reporters, according to Omari Sankofa of the Detroit Free Press. “Just not being strong with the ball, not stopping the guys, making sure we get passes and clearances and so on. We were relaxed with the ball and had too many turnovers.”

Detroit lost the turnover battle 17-12 on Monday night. The Heat generated over 20 points off turnovers. Cunningham led the Pistons with five total. Jaden Ivey was behind him with four of his own.

The Pistons led by one point through three quarters. Entering the fourth quarter, the Heat’s veterans took over the offense and handed the Pistons a loss.

Miami hit 42 percent of its shots down the stretch. Meanwhile, the Pistons managed just six of the 22 shots they attempted from the field. Cunningham played the entire fourth quarter and managed only two of his eight shots.

While the Pistons got a decent performance late in the game from Ivey, who went 3-for-4 to score nine points from three shots, no one other than Cunningham or Ivey fired more than a single shot in the fourth quarter.

With a 106-98 loss, the Pistons are 0-4 on the year. Once again they looked better compared to last year, but still lack the ability to finish difficult games. Monday night was just another example.
