PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – A near-touchdown by Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver George Pickens had fans reading the NFL rule book Monday night.

With 8 minutes and 15 seconds left in the second quarter of the Steelers’ game against the New York Giants on “Monday Night Football,” Pickens appeared to catch a 9-yard pass from quarterback Russell Wilson to give Pittsburgh the lead. The play was called a touchdown on the field by the referees, but the play was reviewed and changed to an incomplete pass because Pickens did not get two feet downfield before going out of bounds.

The replay showed Pickens tap his right foot twice but never put his left foot down before falling out of bounds.

According to the NFL’s rules, a player must touch the ground “with both feet or with any part of his body other than his hands” when inbounding. NFL reporter Jori Epstein of Yahoo Sports pointed out on social media that the rule calls for “both feet,” not “two feet.”

The Steelers tried to challenge the play but were given a timeout because all scoring plays are automatically reviewed.

Many fans, including former NFL star JJ Watt, asked questions about the play.

“Doesn’t one foot count as two feet twice?” Watt posted on social media platform X.

The Steelers and Giants are tied 9-9 at halftime.
