The Chiefs made a surprise trade on Monday, acquiring pass-rushing LB Josh Uche from the Patriots for a 2026 sixth-round pick. Andy Reid spoke about the acquisition on Monday and offered his first comments on the big move.

Reid seems excited to add another difference maker to what is already the NFL’s best defense. Uche had 11.5 sacks two years ago and has yet to complete his rookie contract.

Getting a player with Uche’s promise is exciting, especially considering he gets to play alongside Chris Jones, George Karlaftis, Mika Danna, Tershawn Wharton and soon Charles Omenihu.

“It helps the secondary with any pressure you can put on the quarterback,” Reid said. “We understand you taking care of business up front helps everyone.”

This is an interesting point given Kansas City’s obvious need for cornerbacks. Instead of adding a defensive back at the deadline, Reid and Brett Veach appear to want to increase the pressure at the line of scrimmage instead.

If the team can pressure the quarterback, the secondary doesn’t have to play as well. Perhaps the Chiefs surveyed the landscape of available corners and didn’t like the market. At least Uche seemed like a better fit at that point.

Kansas City could take another step, although Reid’s pointed comments suggest they intend to dominate on the offensive line to ensure opposing passers can’t get the ball right. Uche is a dynamic talent with great potential, while most of the available cornerbacks are aging and have corresponding red flags.

Reid is still happy to see Uche on the field, and Chiefs fans should feel exactly the same.
