Timothée Chalamet crashes his own doppelganger competition in NYC

NEW YORK (AP) — Actor Timothée Chalamet made a surprise appearance at his own lookalike competition in Lower Manhattan on Sunday, an event that drew hundreds of spectators, an eviction notice from police and at least one arrest.

Flanked by bodyguards, Chalamet briefly posed for photos with his high-cheeked, curly-haired lookalikes, some of whom were dressed as the actor’s characters in “Wonka” and the “Dune” films.

But just as the would-be Chalamets strutted down a red carpet in Washington Square Park, police ordered the large group to disperse and fined the organizers $500 for an “unauthorized costume contest.”

At least one participant was led away in handcuffs, but police did not immediately say why. An NYPD spokesman said charges are pending.

“It started as a silly joke and has now turned into chaos,” said Paige Nguyen, producer for YouTube personality Anthony Po, who staged the event.

Organizers had been distributing flyers across New York in recent days for the contest, which promised a $50 prize to the winner, prompting speculation on social media and thousands of RSVPs for an online invitation.

After leaving the park, the group soon found a replacement location at a nearby playground, where more than a dozen participants vied for the audience’s approval on a makeshift stage.

What makes a good Chalamet?

“It’s all in the nose,” said Lauren Klas, a 27-year-old graphic designer who held onto a fence post to get a better view of the stage. “Actually, his entire bone structure.”

After the group was reduced to four people, the remaining participants were asked about their knowledge of French, their plans to make the world a better place, and their romantic intentions Kylie Jenner. Chalamet and Jenner are said to be a couple.

Finally, a winner was chosen: Miles Mitchell, a 21-year-old Staten Island resident who wore a purple Willy Wonka outfit and threw candy from a briefcase into the crowd.

As he stood next to a novelty-sized check made out to “Best Tim,” a group of admirers lined up to take a photo with the winner – or exchange social media profiles.

“I’m excited and also overwhelmed,” Mitchell said. “There were so many good doppelgangers. It was really a bad decision.”
