Ballon d’Or 2024: Men’s and Women’s Awards Ceremony – Live Updates | Ballon d’Or

Important events

“Will an American ever win the Ballon d’Or one day?” asks Kurt Perleberg. Well, Megan Rapinoe won, and I bet another USWNT player will follow suit in the next few years.

As for the men’s award, it’s hard to imagine that happening in the near future. It seems to me that many US players with great potential end up reaching their limits – Gio Reyna, Folarin Balogun, Weston McKennie and even Christian Pulisic. But who knows.

Some big names are missing from the women’s top 30 – including Naomi Girma, Keira Walsh, Kadidiatou Diani and Olga Carmona. There will be no Kopa or Yashin award given to a player at tonight’s ceremony, but will take place on the eve of Euro 2025 qualifying. Does the Ballon d’Or really treat women’s football equally?

Here’s more on the big news of the day and the 30-player rosters announced in September. The countdown has begun, so we’ll bring you the latest as soon as possible…

preamble

Ballon d’Or. Ballon d’Or! Ballon d’Or!!! … Ballon d’Or? Ballon d’Or?! Ballon d’Or??? Football’s biggest night for those who refuse to accept that this is fundamentally a team sport and that any player in the world (yes, even Cristiano Ronaldo) would trade him to win the World Cup is here – but before the ceremony in Paris even started, there was a lot of drama.

Since the moment that caused Rio Ferdinand, the Real Madrid ballplayer, to lose his run Vinicius Junior was the hot favorite to win the men’s prize. However, there were speculative reports on Monday that he could give way to the Manchester City midfielder Rodri soon took off in earnest.

It is now assumed that Real have thrown their collective toys out of the stroller and will no longer send anyone to Paris to celebrate the big party there this evening. Rodri, on the other hand, is here on crutches, which perhaps tells a story in itself. Or there is another twist in the story: the France Football top 30 countdown is now underway.

The Women’s Prize will also be awarded this evening Aitana Bonmati the favorite to retain her crown and continue Barcelona’s dominance after Alexia Putellas won it in 2021 and 2022. Another Barça player, Caroline Graham HansenHe could be a contender next to him Mariona Caldenteywho left Catalonia in the summer to join Arsenal.
