NFL players eat “at least 80,000 Uncrustables per year” – see breakdown by team

NFL athletes may be playing in the big leagues — but their snacking habits are still rooted in their childhood sports days.

When The athlete reported on the NFL’s “secret” halftime snack of orange slices a few years ago, The New York Times Sports Outlet learned that many players have opted to forego the citrus fruit in favor of another kid-friendly favorite: Uncrustables.

This set The athlete on a mission to find out how many of the sealed, crustless peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are eaten by the league each year.

After collecting data at the end of the 2023 season from the 24 participating NFL teams (out of 32 teams), the outlet learned that players “easily complete at least 80,000 Uncrustables per year” — when games, practices and training camps are included. This number of sandwiches would cover more than 18 meters of a football field.

Broken down by team, the Denver Broncos easily topped the list, consuming 7,000 sandwiches per week.

In second place were the Seattle Seahawks with 3,200 games consumed per week, followed by the Jacksonville Jaguars with 3,150 and the Miami Dolphins with 3,000. At the other end of the spectrum, the Cincinnati Bengals and New Orleans Saints ranked last on the list with 500 Uncrustables used.

Coincidentally, Uncrustables — marketed by Smucker’s and found in the freezer aisle of grocery stores — were invented by a retired football player The athlete. Len Kretchman, a former wide receiver for North Dakota State University, went on to work with schools in the hospitality industry. In the 1990s, his wife Emily “suggested he create a mass-produced, crustless peanut butter and jelly sandwich,” the outlet says.

The couple made the first ever Uncrustable in their own kitchen by pressing on the bread with a glass and separating the crust. They curled the edges of the sandwich. Four years after the product’s launch, Smucker’s purchased the company in 1999.

The portable, quick-filling sandwiches eventually found their way to the NFL. Jeff Saturday, a former center for the Indianapolis Colts, recalled that Uncrustables was part of a meal spread laid out for players during Super Bowl week in 2007 before the team’s game against the Chicago Bears.

“We all scored and scored,” Saturday said The athlete. “We grabbed five or six at once.”

Even if you put them in a gym bag or backpack, they held up well, he remembers.

“The Uncrustables always found their way down and got crushed by the playbook. But still edible. “Still in a compartment,” Saturday continued. “It doesn’t matter. You could throw your playbook at it, it makes no difference. Bruised, unbruised, you will crush it.”

The NFL’s love for the Uncrustables continues nearly 20 years later. According to the outlet, San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle eats two Uncrustables on flights to away games and between two and four on flights home. Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce revealed this on his podcast New heights last year that he eats more sandwiches than “anything else in the world.”

“We’re all creatures of habit, dude,” Saturday said The athlete. “Almost scary. If you’re the type of person who has two Uncrustables a day, that’s exactly what you do.”
