Erik ten Hag sacked as Manchester United manager | Football News

The Dutchman was informed of his sacking on Monday and is leaving Old Trafford after two and a half years as manager.

Manchester United have sacked coach Erik ten Hag, the Premier League club announced. The team from Old Trafford is in 14th place in the table after nine games.

“Erik ten Hag has relinquished his role as coach of Manchester United’s men’s first team,” the club said in a statement on Monday.

“Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of the team as interim head coach, supported by the current coaching team, while a permanent head coach is recruited.”

The 54-year-old Dutchman’s job was the subject of speculation for most of last season as United posted their worst Premier League finish in eighth.

When British billionaire and INEOS chairman Jim Ratcliffe took over football operations last season, the club initially stuck with Ten Hag to ensure continuity in the manager’s position during a time of change, but United saw no momentum or progress to believe that they were on the right way.

A poor start to the season also resulted in United drawing their first three Europa League games while maintaining a winning position.

Sunday’s 2-1 Premier League defeat to West Ham United, in which Ten Hag’s side failed to capitalize on numerous chances, only increased media speculation that he would be sacked.

United ended last season with a shock FA Cup final win against Manchester City and Ten Hag pointed to the team’s numerous injuries to explain their poor form.

He signed a new contract to extend his stay until 2026 and get another chance to help the 20-time English league champions return to their former glory.

United’s miserable start to this season came despite spending more than £600 million ($779.28 million) on new players since Ten Hag took charge ahead of the 2022-23 season.
