Jennifer Lopez, Ricky Martin Language support for Kamala Harris

Jennifer Lopez and Ricky Martin reiterate their support for Kamala Harris for president. Their public support came after Donald Trump’s rally at Madison Square Garden on Sunday night, where comedian Tony Hinchcliffe called Puerto Rico a “floating pile of trash.”

Lopez, who previously declared Harris her choice for president, shared several slides from Harris’ campaign on her Instagram Story following the backlash to Hinchcliffe’s appearance. Several came from a post by Harris in which she detailed what she would do to provide economic support to Puerto Rico if elected. “I have been a long-time advocate for Puerto Rico and the Puerto Rican people,” Harris noted in the caption. “Let’s build a better future for both together.”

Martin shared the same post as well as a video of Hinchcliffe. Alongside the clip, he wrote in Spanish: “This is what they think about us.” In one of Martin’s stories, he claimed that a Grid post of the same video had been “shadow banned” and was not appearing on his profile.

The singers’ support was accompanied by an endorsement of Harris from Bad Bunny, who also shared a video of Harris talking about her plans for his native Puerto Rico. In the video, Harris criticizes Donald Trump’s handling of the island during his presidency. “I will never forget what Donald Trump did and didn’t do when Puerto Rico needed a caring and competent leader,” she said. “He left the island. After back-to-back devastating hurricanes, he tried to block aid, offering nothing more than paper towels and insults.”

During his divisive, racist performance at Madison Square Garden, Hinchcliffe made negative comments about Puerto Rico, a U.S. territory. “There’s a lot going on,” he said. “I don’t know if you know this, but right now there is literally a floating island of trash in the middle of the ocean. I think it’s called Puerto Rico.”

On trend

The comedian responded on , which was taken out of context to make it appear racist. I love Puerto Rico and vacation there. I made fun of everyone…look at the whole set.”

Lopez, Martin and Bad Bunny join numerous musicians who have publicly supported Harris, including Taylor Swift, Cher, Bruce Springsteen and Beyoncé.
