SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – Stephen Curry injured his left ankle late in the third quarter of Sunday’s 112-104 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers, tried to return, then left the court again and headed toward the locker room.

At the 8:08 mark of the fourth quarter, Curry briefly returned before exiting again 13 seconds later after twisting his ankle again during an offensive possession – it appeared to roll to the outside. It happened at the end of Golden State’s bench and he hobbled into the tunnel leading to the locker room.

The team said he was out for the day because of a left ankle sprain, and coach Steve Kerr said after the game that Curry would undergo an MRI scan Sunday night.

“He’s fine. He said it was, I think he used the word mild or moderate,” Kerr said. “He’s obviously sprained his ankle a lot before, so he doesn’t think it’s that serious, but it’s obviously a concern.”

Curry was in the process of being defended by Kris Dunn when he turned away from Dunn toward the baseline and re-injured his ankle. It was the 2:43 mark of the third quarter when Curry initially limped to the bench and sat for the remainder of the quarter.

The two-time MVP and all-time NBA 3-point leader finished the game with 18 points, six assists and four rebounds and shot 6-for-11 with four 3-pointers.

The 36-year-old Curry is entering his 16th NBA season and has regularly struggled with ankle problems on both his right and left foot.

“You’re not replacing Steph Curry, but we have a strong team, the numbers speak for that,” said guard Moses Moody.

Curry’s teammates hope he doesn’t have to be sidelined for long.

“Shake your head, I hate it, especially with him,” said guard Gary Payton II. “We’ll be fine.”
