According to the FDA, Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, the frail or elderly, and other people with weakened immune systems. Although healthy people may only experience short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, listeria infection in pregnant women can cause miscarriages and stillbirths.

According to Poison Control, Listeria was first discovered in rodents, rabbits and guinea pigs in the 1920s and is now considered a foodborne pathogen in humans. Listeria is associated with a higher mortality rate than other food-borne illnesses and accounts for nearly 20% of deaths in the United States due to consumption of contaminated food
