NFL fines Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield for grabbing Roquan Smith’s face mask

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield was fined $11,255 for grabbing the Ravens linebacker’s facemask Roquan Smith on Monday night’s game, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero Reports.

The play came in the third quarter as Mayfield struggled trying to convert a first down. He reached out to give Smith the stiff arm and avoid the tackle, but obviously grabbed his face mask and pulled it on in the process.

The fine against Baker Mayfield for his face mask was one of several penalties imposed by the NFL in the game between the Buccaneers and Ravens. Smith was also fined $16,883 for a hip-drop tackle on the Tampa Bay receiver Chris Godwinwho suffered a season-ending injury as a result.

Tampa Bay lost the game against the Ravens by a score of 41-31. Mayfield completed 31 of 45 passes for 370 yards and three touchdowns with two interceptions.

Mayfield and the Buccaneers will have a chance to get back to winning ways when they take on the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. ET.

Chris Godwin injury: Ravens LB Roquan Smith penalized for illegal hip drop tackles

The NFL has fined the Baltimore Ravens (5-2) linebacker Roquan Smith $16,883 for the hip-drop tackle that led to the receiver for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-3). Chris Godwin suffered a dislocated ankle in the fourth quarter of Monday’s Week 7 contest.

The league determined that Smith’s tackle on Godwin was a hip drop, which was prohibited during games. It is at least the ninth such time this season, although there have been no on-field penalties in seven weeks, according to Jonathan Jones CBS Sports. The tackle warrants a 15-yard loss and an automatic first down.

The NFL has attempted to eliminate the hip drop tackle from the game because the injury rate is 20-25 times higher than other tackles.

According to the NFL rulebook, a hip-drop tackle is defined as a technique in which the defender grabs or wraps a runner with either both hands or arms and then relieves himself by “pivoting his hips and/or lower body and lowers on which he lands and catches him”. the runner’s leg(s) at or below the knee.”
