Carlos Sainz will lead the F1 field at the 2024 Mexico City F1 Grand Prix after a stunning pole position lap.

The Ferrari racing driver took his first pole of the season and the first since the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez – both Q3 laps were enough for P1.

He is joined on the front row by Max Verstappen, whose first lap in the third qualifying was canceled due to track limitations – but he did significantly better than Sergio Perez in the sister car Red Bull, who was eliminated in the first qualifying and will be 18th at best.

Lewis Hamilton starts sixth, Lando Norris third – and is in the slipstream of Sainz and Verstappen in the long race to Turn 1 – the longest of the entire season.

Before the race there was an issue in parc ferme that affected Alpine’s Esteban Ocon.

The team decided to replace the control electronics and energy storage on his machine – the third of both he has used this season – exceeding the quota of two.

Under parc ferme rules, this means Ocon loses his 19th starting position and starts from the pitlane, while Zhou Guanyu moves from 20th to 19th.
