Crystal Palace beat Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 in the Premier League on Sunday thanks to a goal from Jean-Philippe Mateta to finally secure their first win of the season and climb out of the relegation zone.

The win eased the pressure on manager Oliver Glasner as Palace moved up to 17th with six points, two points clear of the relegation zone, while Spurs remain in eighth place with 13 points.

Palace started the game with much more intensity and their high pressing gave them the lead as Spurs shot themselves in the foot trying to play the ball out from the back.

Daniel Muñoz grabbed the ball from Spurs centre-back Micky van de Ven when the defender slipped and the full-back put a cross into the box which Eberechi Eze deftly flicked to an unmarked Mateta who fired into the goal.

Without injured captain Son Heung-Min, Spurs struggled to mount attacks while 17-year-old winger Mikey Moore, playing in the Premier League for the first time, was unable to repeat his outstanding performance in the Europa League three days ago.

Eze almost made it 2-0 in the second half, but as he tried to capitalize on Spurs’ high line, his goal was disallowed for a minor offside position. Palace’s appeal for a penalty when he went down in the penalty area moments later was rejected.

But Spurs fell completely behind and had goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario to thank for keeping them in the game with some great saves, while Palace took advantage of opportunities to make it 2-0, with Munoz and Eze firing wide.

Spurs coach Ange Postecoglou had seen enough and made a triple change in the final half hour to bring in Richarlison, Pape Sarr and Timo Werner, but they were unable to make an impact on the game as Palace’s defense remained strong.

The Selhurst Park crowd groaned in unison as seven minutes were added at the end of the second half, but their fans erupted in uproar as the referee blew the final whistle and they celebrated their first league win since May.
