Florida State at Miami not on ESPN Game picks byproduct of Seminoles’ decline

Florida State at Miami used to be college football’s biggest game of the year. Because Florida State entered Saturday’s game at Miami with a 1-6 record, this week’s contest was not selected by ESPN College’s Gameday analysts.

Early in the broadcast, there was just over a minute on ESPN College Gameday before the selection was made. Stanford’s Steve Coughlin singled out Miami over Florida State as one of his favorites. Lee Corso, who played at Florida State, chose the Seminoles as his Super Dog on Saturday.

This selection was made prior to the selection made at the end of ESPN Game Day every Saturday during the college football season. ESPN Gameday wasn’t the only one who didn’t pick Saturday’s Florida State at Miami game. ESPN analyst Greg McElroy didn’t pick FSU’s game at Miami on his “Always College Football” podcast.

ESPN wasn’t the only network to forego picking the Florida State at Miami game. Pro Football Focus, which has Miami playing most of the 2024 season, did not preview the Hurricanes “College Football Week 9 Preview: Storylines, Matchups and Predictions for the Biggest Games.”

The story that ESPN published on game day about the Florida State at Miami game mostly highlighted the story. Miami’s attempt to break a three-game losing streak against Florida State and the Seminoles’ attempt to avoid an ignominious record were the only current facts mentioned on Saturday’s game day.

Florida State must beat sixth-ranked Miami on Saturday to avoid becoming just the second team ever to start a season in the top 10, losing seven of its first eight games to start the season. Illinois began the 1954 season ranked sixth nationally and finished the season 1-8. Florida State entered the 2024 season ranked 10th nationally.
