NYPD investigates viral Belt Parkway crash caught on dashcam as possible insurance fraud

BAY RIDGE, Brooklyn (WABC) — Police say an allegedly staged car crash in Queens was intended to extort insurance money and ultimately make the victim’s insurance more expensive.

The suspected intentional accident occurred on the Belt Parkway earlier this month.

Police still haven’t found the people involved, but they do have one of the cars.

When the car in front of Ashpia Natasha cut her off, stopped abruptly and backed into her, she didn’t know what to think.

“When you got out, you said to the driver, ‘Why did you just back up and hit me?'” Nina Pineda asked the victim.

“I did. At first I asked him what happened and they said, ‘I don’t know what happened.’ At some point I said, ‘Why did you come back to me?’ They were just no,” Natasha said.

She was driving on the Belt Parkway and said there wasn’t much talking, but the video showed four suspects supporting their heads and flexing their hips.

Natasha, a home health nurse, says all the pain seemed to disappear when a man saw her mounted dashboard camera recording her live.

“You can tell the guy was quick when he saw the dashcam, like he was about to turn around and leave,” Natasha added.

The suspects abandoned the car and now police from the 68th Precinct have possession of the vehicle. The car appears to be damaged and there is paint on the bumper.

“The insurance adjuster came and said the damage was estimated at $8,300,” Natasha said.

“Innocent people drive with their families and have children in the back seat. They don’t think that someone is trying to trick them or make money from them, but that they are also risking their lives,” said Phil Maltaghati of United Public Adjusters and Appraisers.

Maltaghati warns anyone involved in an accident to call the police, take photos and videos, get to safety and notify their insurance company immediately. He added that most drivers are underinsured and it’s a good idea to check your own liability insurance and get an umbrella policy for more protection. He also added that he wants to get a dashcam.

“This woman is very lucky to have cameras, that’s all I can say,” Maltaghati said.

The video will help Natasha prove that she did not cause an accident or injuries.

Some people vandalized the car confiscated by the police, making their views known.
