Starting Saturday, registered voters across Michigan will have the opportunity to vote early before the Nov. 5 election, allowing them to cast their ballot without having to wait until Election Day.

In most states, October 26 marks the start of early in-person voting in Michigan. After voters pass a ballot initiative in 2022, Michigan localities will be required to conduct early voting for at least nine days in every state and federal election, with early voting locations remaining open for at least eight hours on those days . Some communities, including Detroit, opted to start even earlier.

Early voting for communities that did not begin earlier begins Saturday and runs through Nov. 3. To find hours and locations for early voting centers in your community, visit the Michigan Voter Information Center online at michigan.gov/vote and click “How.” Should I vote early?” under the section headed “Vote in Person.”

Three communities — Detroit, East Lansing and Canton Township — had opted for early voting before Saturday. Communities can hold early voting for up to 28 days if local election officials choose to add more dates. As of Friday morning, 10,983 voters had cast ballots at an early voting site for the Nov. 5 election, according to the Michigan Secretary of State’s Office. The majority of early voting cast so far has been in Detroit, according to data, with 7,996 people casting ballots in Michigan’s most populous city as of Friday morning.

Early voting works the same as going to the polls on Election Day, except it’s earlier. Registered voters can visit an early voting location, fill out their ballot, and drop it off before Election Day. For voters who want to cast their ballot in person but may be pressed for time on Election Day itself, early voting offers another convenient option, advocates say.

If you requested and received a mail-in ballot, you can also take your completed mail-in ballot to an early voting location in your community and place the ballot in a tabulator there.

How can I vote early in Michigan? And where?

First, you must be registered to vote in Michigan. Within 14 days of an election, Michigan residents who are eligible to vote must register at their local clerk’s office with proof of residency. In some communities, early voting locations may also be located at a local council office.

To find your early voting location and hours, visit the Michigan Voter Information Center at michigan.gov/vote. You can also find your local citizens’ office here if you still need to register to vote. Cities and towns can work with each other or with the county to operate an early voting location. This means your early voting location may be in a different jurisdiction than your usual voting precinct.

Once you are registered and know where you are going, you can visit your early voting location and cast your vote.
