Gleyber Torres’ goal secured a brace after the fan intervened and reached over the stands to catch the ball

LOS ANGELES – Major drama unfolded in the opening game of the 2024 World Series that may have decided which team won Game 1.

With the score tied 2-2 early in the ninth inning between the New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Dodgers, New York second baseman Gleyber Torres drilled a line drive ball 383 feet into left field.

As the ball came down, a fan reached over the railing and caught it with his glove. For a moment it appeared to be a home run that gave the Yankees a 3-2 lead.

But Dodgers left fielder Teoscar Hernández waved his arms in protest, saying the fan had interfered with the ball. After MLB officials reviewed the play, Torres was sent back to second base with two outs.

After an intentional walk by Yankees star Juan Soto, Dodgers pitcher Blake Treinen got Aaron Judge to come out and end the inning.

The fan was escorted out of Dodger Stadium by security.

The controversial play drew comparisons to legendary fan interference calls such as Yankees fan Jeffrey Maier reaching over the stands at Yankee Stadium in the 1996 ALCS to support Derek Jeter’s home run.

Los Angeles won the game 6-3 with a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 10th inning by Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman.

“It might be the greatest baseball moment I’ve ever experienced,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said after the game. “Just that momentum, you knew it was gone. Pure elation. You don’t see teams celebrating after a game with a walk-off like that, but it was definitely justified.”

Game 2 takes place Saturday night at 8:08 p.m. ET in Los Angeles. The Yankees will go with left-hander Carlos Rodón, while the Dodgers will go with rookie right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto.
