WHAT IS AT STAKE?

Fox was betting that there might be another game after Game 1 of a potential Yankees-Dodgers World Series that would be of interest to their respective metro areas. The baseball teams have delivered, but the Scarlet Knights and Trojans aren’t exactly providing the exciting nightcap that could have been at the start of the season. USC is in a free fall, having lost three straight games and four of five games despite leading in the fourth quarter in each of those contests. Rutgers isn’t doing much better, having also suffered three straight losses and a weak UCLA offense looking like a powerhouse in a 35-32 home loss.

KEY MATCHUP

Rutgers RB Kyle Monangai against the USC defensive line. Monangai ranks ninth in the FBS with 845 yards rushing and has scored 10 touchdowns on the ground. The fifth-year senior contributed against the Bruins, rushing for 106 yards and three scores, and will now get a shot against the injury-plagued Trojans. Interior defenders Nate Clifton and Gavin Meyer are solid additions from the transfer portal and will be tested by Monangai’s toughness between the tackles.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Rutgers: QB Athan Kaliakmanis made some big plays against UCLA, completing 18 of 30 passes for 287 yards, but his fourth-quarter interception was costly. The Minnesota transfer should find some opportunities on the field, especially if USC S Kamari Ramsey is unable to play or is limited due to injury.

USC: WR Ja’Kobi Lane made a spectacular one-handed touchdown catch against the Terrapins, but the sophomore’s inconsistency also came to light as he finished with four receptions for 51 yards. The Trojans desperately need a leadership weapon to advance in the passing game, and Lane has the talent to be that player.

FACTS & FIGURES

USC QB Miller Moss is averaging 6.9 yards per pass attempt, tied for 12th in the Big Ten with Kaliakmanis and Minnesota’s Max Brosmer. The Trojans had been one of the most explosive air raids in the country during head coach Lincoln Riley’s first two seasons. …This is Rutgers’ third trip to California. They lost at Cal 21-7 in 1999 and at Fresno State 52-51 in overtime in 2013.
