BYU Basketball’s Justin Young honors Amir Abdur-Rahim – Deseret News

The world of college basketball was shocked on Thursday when news surfaced that Amir Abdur-Rahim, head coach of USF’s men’s basketball team, had died earlier in the day at the age of 43.

Abdur-Rahim died during a medical procedure, the school announced.

Shortly after, a member of the BYU men’s basketball coaching staff took to social media to express condolences to Abdur-Rahim’s family and pay tribute to the coach.

Justin Young, the Cougars’ new recruiting director and older brother of head coach Kevin Young, knew Abdur-Rahim as they both grew up in the Atlanta area and Justin Young made a name for himself in the recruiting world along with Abdur-Rahim becoming a star in the coaching world .

“Amir Abur-Rahim was truly a force for good in the world,” Justin Young wrote on conversation, it would be better if you did. I am heartbroken for his family and his basketball families.”

Abdur-Rahim became the head coach at Kennesaw State in Georgia in April 2019. The Owls won just one game in Abdur-Rahim’s first season, but by their fourth season they had gone 26-9 and reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2019 in school history.

As a No. 14 seed, Kennesaw State had a double-digit lead over No. 3 seed Xavier in the second half. The game was tied with 18 seconds left before Xavier pulled away and won 72-67.

Abdur-Rahim parlayed his success at Kennesaw State into becoming the head coach at USF last season. In his first year at the helm, the Bulls posted a 25-8 record (including 16-2 in conference play), setting a school record for most wins in a season and reaching the 20 mark for the sixth time in program history Win.

Abdur-Rahim is the brother of Shareef Abdur-Rahim, who played 13 seasons in the NBA and has been president of the NBA G League since 2018. Amir Abdur-Rahim also leaves behind his wife Arianne and three children.
