PREVIEW: The Red Wings return home to battle the Devils on Star Wars Night on Thursday

Fischer added that finding ways to win close matchups like this will only be beneficial for the Red Wings as the season progresses.

“I guarantee you there will be a game where we work our asses off and somehow end up losing by a goal,” Fischer said. “You’ll be like, ‘How the hell did we lose that game?’ This happens so often in the NHL. I guarantee you another team will win (Thursday) with very few shots. Strange things happen. Of course it’s not sustainable in the long term, but when you have these opportunities, you have to get these points.”

As for the Devils, who enter Thursday tied for first in the Metropolitan Division with the New York Rangers, they are coming off an 8-5 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday.

Timo Meier (four goals, five assists) and Stefan Noesen (three goals, six assists) each have a team-high nine points this season, while three players (Nico Hischier, Jack Hughes and Jesper Bratt) each have eight points. In net, goaltender Jacob Markstrom has a 3-2-1 record with a goals-against average of 2.99 and a save percentage of .902 in six games.

Fischer said Detroit is focused on limiting turnovers against New Jersey’s “high-flying offense.”

“You always look at their games or results, and they always score a lot of goals,” Fischer said of the Devils, who lead the NHL in goals this season (32). “Usually when you play them it’s a little back and forth. They have some quality, talented players in the Hughes (brothers) and Bratt. There are a lot of people with fast transition games. You can’t turn the puck over with them. When you turn the puck over, you chase it back to your end all night long.”
